Idie Atencio Photography – Small Business Friday

This morning I welcome Idie, of Idie Atencio Photography to the blog! I love her whimsical images, and especially appreciate her answer to question 9! Enjoy, and have a fabulous weekend!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself! (name, husband, kiddos, business name etc.)

I’m Idie and I am the girl behind Idie Atencio Photography. I grew up in Ohio and moved to Sun Valley, Idaho after college. I met my husband there and we moved to Salt Lake City almost six years ago. We have a four-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter. There is never a dull moment around here!

2. Tell us something most people don’t know about you! Crazy, funny, embarrassing, etc.

I had an internship with a concert promotion company when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened in Cleveland. I had a backstage pass for the big opening concert and was in the presence of A LOT of amazing musicians. It was definitely one of the highlights my life!

3. What are your favorite movies or books?

I’m in a book club now, so I actually have read a few books lately. I recently finished “Sense of an Ending,” which I really liked.

I love watching movies, but don’t have a lot of time anymore. My all time favorite is probably Princess Bride.

4. What are your favorite foods or drinks?

I usually drink water (boring!). I could probably live on pizza alone, but one of my favorite things to make for lunch is grilled cheese on rye bread.

5. What does your typical day look like?

I sleep in as long as possible! (I’m lucky because my husband feeds the kids in the morning while I’m lingering in bed). I take the kids to school and have a whopping two hours to myself. I’ll either hit the gym or try to get some work done. Our afternoons are a free-for-all. I make a point to spend quality time with the kids, instead of quality time on my computer. When my husband gets home, we eat dinner together, then put kiddies to bed. Evenings are usually spent on the computer, but sometimes I catch a tv show with my husband.

6. Tell us your business name, and give us all and any link so your website/blog/social media.

You can find me at or on facebook at

7. Give us a brief description of the business, and how long have you been in business.

The reason I am in business today is because my friends asked me if I would photography their wedding. At first I thought they were crazy, but I was intrigued by the offer. I had eight months to prepare and vowed to do the BEST job I possibly could. I took a class, I went to a workshop, I read everything I could get my hands on, etc. After all that effort, I thought I should put all my new knowledge into action! I have been in business for about 2.5 years. I specialize in babies and families…not weddings. 🙂

8. What do you love most about having a small business?

I love the flexibility a small business offers. I also like the fact that I don’t have to answer to anyone and that I have full creative license.

9. What is the hardest part about having a small business?

Balance! I want to be the best mom I can be while working on my business, but finding time for both is difficult. I have to set limits for myself, and literally set a timer sometimes when I need to get work done. If I don’t watch it, I could end up at the computer while my kids watch movies all day!

10. What is your biggest inspirations? (other photographers, the outdoors, family etc!)

I’m constantly impressed by the amount of talented photographers out there. I can’t pinpoint any one or two who inspire me. I’m inspired by all of my peers. I also find that I see “pictures” in my every day life. My mind is taking snapshots all day long.

11. Where do you see your business in 5 years?

In five years, both of my kids will be in school full time and I hope I will be able to spend more time growing my business.

Idie is an amazing photographer. She created a calm, happy vibe when working with my three children and captured beautiful images. Her work became my Christmas card and and countless people tell me it’s the one picture they’ve put on their fridge that will never come down – a testament to her work! Thanks for the interview – I agree Idie’s answer to #9 too!ReplyCancel

Idie, I so relate to your point about those whopping two hours of preschool, and then holding off until night to get back to work. Your work is stunning, though, so you seem to have found harmony balancing all these roles!ReplyCancel
